| What is an Exercise Test for? |
|
This way, subjecting the heart to controlled exercise, the test is used to detect patients with heart problems (poor circulation of the heart or irregular rhythms) and to assess the physical condition, one of the most powerful predictors of heart disease and mortality. The main cause of death in Spain, and in many of the developed countries, is of cardiovascular origin in both men and women. This means, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction or blood vessel disease of the brain (stroke). Most risk factors associated with these diseases are smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, hypertension, poor diet, obesity and low physical fitness or physical inactivity (sedentary lifestyle). Many people may not have symptoms of any kind, and even a normal electrocardiogram, but may have a heart problem that can only be detected in an Exercise Test in men and women. The Exercise Test is the chosen medical test for detecting circulation of the heart, and the coronary arteries. Also, although no heart problem is detected in the Exercise Test, detection of a low fitness level, reflects a poor prognosis with reference to heart disease and mortality, therefore, involves more decisive action by the doctor regarding exercise or medication, and knowledge of heart health status of the patient, knowing thereby that measures should be taken to improve the heart health.
