Sports Medical Heart Examination Every year several athletes, or children die during a sports competition, mainly due to causes of heart abnormalities. These heart problems are rare and difficult to detect, so identification is not always possible. In recent years we have conducted and published many scientific papers seeking to detect and prevent these sudden deaths. Based on these studies, the Sports Medical Examination was developed as an increasingly effective method of preventing sudden death of the athlete. This is recommended by prestigious international institutions, having been proven to be effective.
Apart from the recommendations of the International Federation of Sports Medicine and the American College of Sports Medicine, in Europe, this Examination is also recommended by the Medical Commission of the International Olympic Committee, Study Group of Sports Cardiology of the European Society of Cardiology, and the Spanish Federation of Sports Medicine.
All recommend a routine resting electrocardiogram which offers increased ability to detect heart problems. The medical examination is aimed at not only athletes, but also to children and adults who start a physical activity or sport. This consists of an examination or questionnaire on personal and family history, physical examination, primarily of the heart (blood pressure, pulse and auscultation for heart murmurs) and a resting electrocardiogram. Depending on the results , it may be necessary or advisable to conduct a exercise test or other additional studies such as echocardiography.
